Cultural Fit: The Polite Way to Say “You’re Not Like Us.” (a.k.a. “We love diversity …. as long as it looks and thinks like us.”)
Ever heard this one?
“We really liked you, but we’re not sure you’re the right cultural fit.”
Translation:
“You make us uncomfortable because you’re not a copy of us.”
It’s funny how cultural fit always sounds like a compliment – until you realize it’s code for please don’t disrupt our nice, predictable bubble.
Companies love to say they value diversity.
Until diversity actually walks through the door, with new ideas, new energy, the guts to say “this is not right”, and maybe a slightly different accent.
Then suddenly, it’s all about fit.
Not skill.
Not experience.
Just… fit.
You’d think “fit” means shared values, right?
No. It means shared habits, shared jokes, shared small talk over lunch, the stuff that makes everyone feel comfortable, and keeps real change safely out of reach.
In reality, most companies don’t hire for culture.
They hire for comfort.
And comfort has never built anything extraordinary.
