A Democracy Where Nobody Decides Anything

Tech loves the phrase “We’re a flat organization.”

It sounds modern, progressive, enlightened; like everyone holds hands and sings kumbaya around a Figma board.

Reality?

It’s Lord of the Flies in business casual.

Flat organizations are just hierarchical companies that hid the hierarchy so nobody can complain about it.

There’s still power.

There’s still politics.

There’s still the Favorite Child of the CEO.

The only difference is: nobody tells you who’s actually in charge.

And because nobody wants to offend anyone, every decision becomes a group project from hell.

Want to ship a feature?

30 people must “sync.”

15 must “align.”

7 must “approve.”

3 must “feel heard.”

And 1 will eventually block it for a reason that makes absolutely no sense.

Every meeting becomes a democratic disaster:

“Let’s discuss this again.”

“Let’s revisit.”

“Let’s get more data.”

“Let’s do w workshop.”

“Let’s bring this to the leadership council.”

Leadership council?

You mean the same four people who never agree on anything and still think brainstorming is a strategy?

And the funniest part is, everyone thinks they have authority.

But actually, nobody does.

So in a “flat org,” you get:

Full responsibility.

Zero power.

Endless opinions.

No decisions.

Infinite slack messages.

Permanent chaos.

And then, when things fall apart, the CEO shows up saying:

“We empower our teams to self-organize.”

Self-organize?

Half the team doesn’t even know what the company is building next quarter.

Flat organizations are not progressive.

They’re just dysfunctional companies pretending the chaos is freedom.

It’s not empowerment.

It’s abandonment.
