新人談薪談得漂亮,一進來比老員工高一截;

區間可以寬到塞下一整座城市,也可以緊到連紙片都塞不過去;

Where “Competitive Compensation” Means Absolutely Nothing

Every company loves to brag about their “competitive salary.”

It’s on the website.

It’s in the job description.

It’s the line HR repeats with religious devotion.

But what does “competitive” actually mean?

Nothing.

It’s a vibe.

A mood.

A horoscope.

If you ask for the number, the conversation suddenly collapses into smoke:

“We can’t disclose that yet.”

“It depends on the candidate.”

“We offer holistic value.”

Holistic value?

I’m here to work, not meditate.

And then there’s the internal salary chaos:

The new hire with shiny negotiation skills gets paid way more than the loyal employee who’s been holding the company together with duct tape and trauma.

Meanwhile, someone in another department with the same title earns 30% more, not because of performance,
but because they flirted better with the VP during a networking event.

Raises?

A myth.

The Easter Bunny of corporate finance.

You’ll get a 2% “increase” that barely covers inflation and comes with a speech about “recognizing your contribution.”

Promotions?

Even worse.

They’ll promote you to a new title but “forget” to increase the salary.

Because apparently titles are the real compensation now.

And don’t even get me started on salary bands.

Those are basically fan fiction:

too wide,

too vague,

too theoretical,

and too convenient for the company.

Salary transparency?

They only become transparent after you quit and everyone suddenly realizes you were underpaid.

The truth is:

Companies treat salaries like a secret weapon, not to reward people, but to control them.

The less you know, the cheaper you stay.
